Wizard of Oz

TNT is showing "The Wizard of Oz" tonight. Lord knows how many times I've seen this movie over the years. I can remember watching as a child, so scared at certain scenes I ran to the kitchen. I wasn't so scared that I couldn't look at the television through the door, but a black and white Margaret Hamilton sending flying monkeys was just about too much for me at four or five. We didn't get a color TV until about the third or so Super Bowl game. Dad and I went to the neighbors to watch the game on color. By the time we had a color set, The Wiz was kinda anticlimactic.

Over the years the movie became decidedly cheesy and uncool, or retro and hip, reflecting the current bias of the viewer - namely me. The movie never changed a bit, just my feelings about it.

Now I enjoy it as a children's classic, done in the extravagant style of it's time.

Oh, and the picture? The album cover for The Electric Light Orchestra's El Dorado. Remember when album covers were cool to look at? Plus, this album was and still is pretty dern good. The scene is backwards - in the movie the Wicked Witch tries to grab the shoes from left rather than the right. Why the image was reversed I have no idea.

I'll be right over there, with the headphones on, trippin' out and looking at Moody Blues album covers.

I saw it last night. I think it used to be on around the same time every year. There were parts that scared me, too.

When I was in third grade, I got to be in the school play and yelp, "Hail, Dorothy! The wicked witch is dead!" I always was a little monkey, anyway. (Btw., stole the role from my bully...there is justice in life.)

I spent many Oz watching sessions at my grandmother's house, (back when I was little and it was black and white all the way through because her TV was), hiding under her dining room table with my hands over my ears. I still have never seen it all the way through.

dear sir i sell computers for a living and i can assure you that vista supports/recognizes 4gb of ram, not only do we have several running in our store but i have one at home too. don't know where you got that impression, but suffer no more and add the extra ram you want, of course check with your laptop or desktop manual/manufacturer, as it may be your particular model and it's motherboard that maxes out at 2gb, certainly NOT windows vista. have a better day now.

one more thing, you can only obtain downgrade rights from vista if you have a computer that came loaded with vista business (or above such as ultimate - which would be a waste todowngrade, bit locker is a real treat). otherwise you would need to completely reformat your hd from scratch and load a clean windows xp and risk losing all the extras the machine came preloaded with, microsoft simply won't let you downgrade with vista like you could with previous os

Vista 64bit does in fact recognize 4GB memory, so it is entirely possible you have computers at your store running that much. However, MS admits the 32bit systems - which includes Vista Home Premium - limits the total available memory to 3.12GB.

"However, the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB." found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605

Yes, I'm well aware that Windows won't let you downgrade to an earlier version without a complete reformat - geez, that has only been around since, oh I dunno, 3.1 or so? Since I've only been playing with pc's since W95 I wouldn't know about that. What you are speaking about as extras are "bundled applications" which would be trial offers for Office, Norton Internet Security and others of similar ilk. Most of which I clean off a new machine immediately if not before.

And OMG, what would we do if I decided to go Linux????

Plus, I'm curios - the only place I've mentioned going back to XP on my new laptop is at Andrea's place - are you Sigivald over there?

Perhaps I am over generalizing if I say Vista won't recognize the 4GB I theoretically might install - it may or may not be strictly hardware issues - but the fact remains MY machine isn't going to recognize more than 3.12GB in the OS it came with. XP wouldn't recognize it either (without some major "tuning"), but it wouldn't need the extra memory - 2GB would work just fine.

But, no worries just yet, I'm finding I kinda like Vista - it's just learning the new quirks. Aero is cool and all, but to me it's underwhelming - not the total visual experience it seems to be touted as. So far, not worth the effort to reformat.

So yeah, I could stick two 2GB sticks in this laptop and maybe even get them to work with some major work, but I'm not really into that much work anymore. I've turned into a consumer who wants it to work right now without pain. Getting 4GB of RAM to work in the average new 32bit new laptop today qualifies as a pain to me.

Thanks for stopping by.
